Marriage Teeter Totter

In marriage, life is back and forth—give and take.

Marriage can feel like a teeter totter… the kind we all played on during elementary school.

Picture the old wooden ones—long, heavy, and built for two people to balance each other out.

The goal was simple:

👉 Find someone close to your size so the ride felt even.

On a good day, it worked perfectly.

You and your partner moved together—up and down—with ease.

It was fun. Balanced. Enjoyable.

But on other days?

Not so much.

________________________________________

Sometimes your partner was bigger, stronger, or just plain ornery.

They would slam their side down—trying to bounce you off.

And if both of you were determined not to fall off…

👉 it became a rough ride.

Up and down.

Back and forth.

Holding on tight.

Neither willing to let go.

That’s what marriage can feel like.

One person hitting the ground hard…

The other trying not to get thrown off…

Yet both holding on—refusing to give up.

Life brings those hard hits:

• illness

• loss

• financial struggles

• family challenges

• emotional breakdowns

And in those moments, it’s easy to blame each other.

Or even easier…

👉 to walk away.

We’ve had those moments.

After the first ten years of marriage, I thought I knew my husband well.

Then life happened.

Challenges came.

Our differences became more obvious.

And it would have been easy to give up.

But we didn’t.

We stayed.

Over time, something changes.

The ride becomes smoother.

You learn each other’s rhythms.

You sense when the other needs to adjust.

You know when it’s time to rest.

That kind of balance doesn’t happen overnight.

👉 It takes time.

👉 It takes commitment.

👉 It takes choosing each other—again and again.

________________________________________

Marriage is not just for the beginning years.

It’s for a lifetime.

All the way until God calls us home.

And here’s the truth:

We will always be different enough to clash…

But similar enough to grow together.

The hardest part?

When one person decides they don’t want to ride anymore.

When they let go… and walk away.

Marriage isn’t meant to be coast mode.

It takes effort.

It takes love.

It takes showing up—even when it’s hard.

God created us to walk through life together.

“It is not good for man to be alone…” — Genesis 2:18

Simple Tips for a Strong Marriage

• Say “I love you” often

• Pray and eat together

• End the day with connection—a hug, a kiss, a moment

Marriage will always have its ups and downs.

But when both people are willing to stay on the ride…

👉 it becomes something beautiful.
