Battle for Contentment

Jun 28, 2023

Are you like me on the conquest for contentment?

I work hard to stay in a mindset of rest and satisfaction, being grateful for all God has given me each day. One day of contentment leads to the next and then I slip into an ease and I slack in the war plan to keep my ground - I skip my quiet time, I swipe over the inspirational post, I don't sit down to rest when the nudge comes......Then I get tripped up. I feel like I fall flat on my face and the peace is gone, the thankfulness turns to critical judgment, and I begin to complain. My eyes are facing downward and I only see the grind of the day and have forgot the glory of God living within me. Geez.

The struggle for contentment is real for most women as we share this difficulty in finding peace in our days. It’s a challenging battle to win as the enemy wants to steal and destroy our peace, joy, and contentment. It seems to be the number one battle we fight and try to take possession of. It truly is a battle, a war, and we MUST be firmly planted and grounded to win the battle for contentment.

Contentment seems a novel idea in our complicated world where nothing holds our minds attention for more then a few minutes. Most of us are easily distracted by the zoom, flash, and buzz of whatever is in front of us. There is little promotion for peace in the marketing world, oh no, that doesn’t sell much. Peace is gone. Long gone. It’s like trying to find a diamond in a stack of hay. Good luck!

BUT, with God ALL things are possible when we come to Him in prayer seeking what He wants for our lives – contentment - as defined in the dictionary is:

  • Resting of the mind.
  • Satisfaction which holds the mind in peace.
  • Feeling of satisfaction with one’s situation.
  • Having a mind of peace.

Contentment is a quality we'll strive for until we reach heaven’s gates because God wants us to come to Him, to seek Him in the morning giving our requests (prayer) so He can hear our voices and build a solid relationship with us. In doing this He allows us to enjoy time of contentment with Him. As the day goes on this serene time slowly diminishes and struggles tend to come to the forefront of our thinking. This is why contentment can be compared to a battle. There will be times to gain a foothold and celebrate the win when we’ve been able to rest; by enjoying a good book and a great cup of coffee with a friend. We will feel the satisfaction in our mind and body. Then there will be days when the battle rages and the enemy is seemingly attacking from all sides and we feel him stocking us and sense he's just around the corner ready to pounce.

As the battle intensifies with opposition from all sides we must remember what we are made of; God within us, the hope and glory. We must get into our battle mode and a good solider focusing on our battle plan:

  • We MUST shake off the fear and reposition ourselves in a battle stance to fight.
  • We fight back by holding up our shield of faith with our sword of the Word close by.
  • We solidly plant ourselves with the boots of peace and tighten our belt of truth.
  • We take our stand with God as He covers us with the breast plate and robe of righteousness along with the helmet of salvation.
  • We are fully dressed and ready for war!

The battle can be won as we keep our eyes on the goal - to have peace, satisfaction, and contentment with God by our side as we live in this imperfect world until we meet Him face-to-face.

ACTION

Prepare yourself daily as you go out and fight the battle for contentment. It takes a good, strong solider being properly dressed for battle spiritually to win the fight. And when we will do win we get glimpses of peace and satisfaction and we know we are working for the right Commander and Chief.

We pray for the wisdom to know when we need to rest to gain quietness that helps us still ourselves in this fast-paced world.
