Mind-Numbing Tasks = Calm Mind
Jun 02, 2025Ever find yourself zoning out while organizing sock drawers or testing old pens? You're not alone—and it might just be God’s gift to your soul.
There are days I catch myself doing simple, mind-numbing tasks:
- Sorting through leftover containers to see if lids match
- Organizing sewing material by color
- Cleaning out a junk drawer
- Going through pens to see if they still work
- Trying to find a mate for a lost sock
- Sorting old vs. new towels in the linen closet
Then suddenly I ask myself, “Why are you doing this?”
Depending on my state of mind, the answer varies:
“Just cleaning.”
“On a bunny trail—this is where I landed.”
“I’m just zoned out.”
But when I really pause to reflect, the deeper truth comes out:
“My mind just needs a break.”
The Constant Buzz in Our Minds
My mind is always moving. Thinking about someone I could help, writing a note of encouragement, figuring out dinner, remembering the laundry, wondering if we’re out of milk... you get it.
This swirl of thoughts? It's normal for me. I was made this way—active, nurturing, always wanting to make things better. But wow, it can get noisy up there.
And sometimes, God uses these quiet, mindless moments to help me stop striving and simply breathe.
The Gift of Zone-Out Mode
When I’m doing something repetitive and simple, it helps me enter pause mode. It’s not just zoning out—it’s zoning into peace.
This calm state of mind doesn’t always come naturally. It takes practice. I must remind myself that quiet is good. It fills my soul.
It also opens my heart to God’s presence so I can hear His still, small voice.
"Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track."
—Proverbs 3:6 MSG
God Enjoys Our Stillness
God delights when we stop the busyness and just be with Him. That quiet can look like:
- A whispered prayer of thanks
- Singing a worship song while folding laundry
- Tears that come out of nowhere
- Sitting still and breathing Him in
"For the Lord your God is living among you.
He is a mighty savior.
He will take delight in you with gladness.
With his love, he will calm all your fears.
He will rejoice over you with joyful songs."
—Zephaniah 3:17 NLT
These simple moments—mundane to the world—are sacred to the God.
Let It Be Okay
These zone-out moments aren’t laziness. They’re invitations. A divine pause.
When they come, accept them. Let them quiet your soul.
"But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint."
—Isaiah 40:31 ESV
