It Starts with You
Aug 01, 2025"It Starts with You": A Coffee Chat About Faith, Family & Your Spiritual Role
Hey friend,
Let’s imagine we’re sitting together over a warm cup of coffee—just the two of us. Maybe we’re at your kitchen table or tucked into a cozy corner at the local coffee shop. I’m looking you in the eye and saying this with all the love and truth I’ve got in me:
You are essential.
You matter in your family’s spiritual life more than you probably realize.
Now, before you start brushing that off or thinking, “But Sue, I didn’t grow up in a strong Christian home,” or “I’ve made so many mistakes,” let me stop you right there and tell you—your spiritual legacy can start with you today.
Our Spiritual Family Tree
We live in a world where knowing your ancestry is a big deal. I mean, how many of us have done one of those genealogy projects in grade school or poked around on Ancestry.com just out of curiosity? There's something powerful about knowing where we come from.
But did you know the Bible is our ultimate family tree?
Even the parts of Scripture we tend to skim over—the lists of names and lineages in 1 Chronicles—remind us that we belong to a long line of people who walked with God. And guess what? If you believe in Jesus, your part of that lineage too.
So even if you feel like you don’t come from a “godly family,” you can be the one who starts a new spiritual heritage.
Why You Matter in Your Family’s Faith
Let’s be real: our kids and grandkids are growing up in a world filled with noise. So many voices are trying to tell them what’s true, what’s important, and what life is all about.
But your voice—steady, loving, rooted in God’s truth—can cut through that noise.
You don’t need to be perfect.
You don’t need to have all the answers.
But you do have something they need: a relationship with the One True God.
God’s Word tells us again and again to pass on His truth to the next generation. In Deuteronomy 4, He says, “Don’t forget the things you’ve seen me do. Keep reminding yourself and tell your children and grandchildren too.”
So if you’ve seen God’s faithfulness in your life—and I know you have—talk about it. Even the little things. Even the messy ones.
What to Share with Them
Here’s what I want you to know: your stories matter.
Not just the polished ones where everything turned out great, but the raw ones too—where you were scared, or struggling, or clinging to God for dear life.
Tell your kids and grandkids what God has done.
Tell them what He’s taught you.
Tell them how He showed up when you didn’t think you could make it another day.
Psalm 22 says, “Future generations will hear about the wonders of the Lord… they will hear about everything He has done.”
Let them hear it from you.
How to Do It (Without Preaching)
You might be thinking, “But Sue, I’m not a preacher.” Good news—neither am I.
Sharing faith doesn’t have to be complicated. It looks like this:
- A quick prayer together before bed.
- A Bible verse on a sticky note by the bathroom mirror.
- Sharing how God helped you through something when you’re riding in the car.
- Reading a devotion at breakfast.
- Singing worship music in the kitchen while making dinner.
Simple things.
Everyday things.
Things that show your family faith isn’t just for Sundays—it’s part of your life.
Deuteronomy 6 says to talk about God’s truth “when you're at home, walking along the road, going to bed at night, and getting up in the morning.” In other words: just live it out and talk about it along the way.
Friend, It Starts with You
Whether your kids are still under your roof or fully grown with families of their own, you still carry influence.
Your faith, your prayers, your example—it matters.
You might feel like the world’s a mess (and let’s be honest, it kind of is). But your home, your family, your heart, that’s where change can begin. The next generation needs strong, God-loving women like you who will stand in the gap, tell the truth, and point them to Jesus.
So today, let me remind you over this imaginary cup of coffee:
👉 You are not too late.
👉 You are not disqualified.
👉 You are not alone.
You are a spiritual mother. A matriarch. A builder of legacy.
Let your faith overflow. Let your love speak loud. And trust that God will take what you plant today and grow it into something beautiful tomorrow.
