Uniquely Your Own

Dec 05, 2023

Recently I went clothes shopping. So what?

I don’t like shopping. So that's why it's a BIG deal.

Going to a physical store to shop is an overwhelming task, shuffling through the racks, finding the right size, trying on clothes, putting them back where you found them, going to another store, and starting the process all over again. UGH!  I’d rather sit in the mall corridor and people watch with a good cup of coffee.

A wonderful friend helped me shop for a few new clothing items because my closet was bare of nicer clothes to wear for speaking engagements. She kept on bringing me items to try on and I found myself making quick decisions on pieces I didn’t like but found myself attracted to many items with distinctive features, nothing extremely radical yet leaning on one-of-a-kind aspects that were eye catching. I must admit it was fun.

I walked away with four new pieces of clothing that fit my personality to a tee.

From my earliest memories, I have been different in many ways; how I explain myself, how I accomplish tasks, and how I command attention. This has made me feel awkward and out of place at times. Can any of you relate? The polite way to describe myself is UNIQUE!

Each one of us was created exclusively different, the way God wanted us to be. He’s confident in what He made; it’s us that needs to accept how He made us.

It can take years to become accepting of how we were made, and we can get down on ourselves as we instinctively compare ourselves to the world. The enemy attacks our thoughts by questioning the unique characteristics, styles, and attributes we display which can lead to a bombardment of additional self-doubting issues.

Catching ourselves in the negative thought pattern of the enemy’s self-destruction is the key to a new way of thinking. Once you hear the thought, capture it, drag it to its death, stomp on it, and begin to pray for God to renew your mind with positive, glorifying statements to raise up the goodness of God within you.

Fighting back with God’s Word is the best defense when the enemy attacks with on onslaught of negative thoughts. Knowing God’s Word and having it in you will make them flee. This is where we need disciplined and set aside quiet time with God and read the Bible.

Being grounded in His Word is ammunition to war against negative views of ourselves.

Finding verses to hang on to for the day can be extremely helpful in getting through the mental battle. An example of a verse that is short and easy to remember is Genesis 1:31.

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.  Genesis 1:31 NIV

In the footnotes it provided additional ideas to grasp on to, God is pleased in how he made us. We are valued by God.

Another statement I keep in my mind is from in her book So Long Insecurity on page 81.

“Nothing is more impressive than a person who is secure in the unique way God made her.”  ~ Beth Moore

Woohoo! Hang on to that for the day!

Being settled and confident in our God given uniqueness is empowering, so celebrate!

This is why I challenge and encourage you to boldly make a statement about yourself that describes you. Here’s an example I’ve created for myself, and I hope it stirs you up to do the same.

God made me just the way He wanted. I am uniquely peculiar, boldly honest, and courageously different. I am okay being ME, the ME God intended ME to be! ~ Sue L. Hamilton

Father God, please help us remember that you made us exactly how you wanted to. We are the ones that need to accept our unique, interesting, and different qualities. Thank you for letting us be alive and able to love you and love ourselves. In Jesus name we pray, AMEN!
